I am originally from Memphis,
Tennessee. I lived there until my early-teens, when my step-father was
transferred to Dallas, Texas. We stayed in Dallas until I was about 14
years old, when once again my step-father was transferred - this time to
Houston, Texas. So we moved to The Woodlands, where I continued high school
and started junior college. At the age of 22 I decided to join the U.S.
Navy and was stationed in Norfolk, Virginia. I served in the Navy until
1994.
That's when my pest control career began. I was employed by Orkin Pest
Control as a pest technician in Virginia Beach, Virginia. After running a
route for awhile, I moved over to the sales department. I felt really good
in that environment. The men I worked with were very outgoing and knowledgeable
and really taught me a lot about the business.
After a couple of years in Virginia Beach, I was asked to transfer
to another branch that needed experienced sales people. So I moved to the
Portsmouth branch -which was a great experience for me. I worked with an
excellent sales manager who taught me how to be the best I could be. While
in Portsmouth, I was promoted to Sales Manager, and worked there for about
three more years.
Then I accepted a position as a sales manager with Terminex.
Long story, short - it was not a good mix. After working with Terminex
for about a year, I returned to Orkin. Unfortunately, things had changed
while I was gone. Different people, and different management styles,
but I stayed for about a year.
By this time our daughter was 3 years old, so we decided to move back
to Texas to be near her grandparents. I received a transfer to a branch
in Houston, Texas and went to work. All was fine for a couple of years,
but I began to feel like I wasn't moving forward. I thought a change
of pace was the answer and worked for a short period of time with a couple
of other companies in another industry. This was not the answer! I was
not making enough money and the work was terrible.
I had to find something that would support my family, make me happy and
that I was good at. I was out looking for a job one day when I saw
a truck going down the road with "Sears Pest Control" on the
side. I had no idea Sears was even in the industry. It wasn't long
before I was working with Sears as a salesman/technician and loving
it. Sales were good, money was good, and everything was heading back
the way it had been. In practically no time at all, I had been promoted
to Supervisor. Life was good again.
Well, as the saying goes, "nothing stays the same." Sears started
having problems with their business and eventually sold the pest control
division to Terminex. Of course, I wasn't going to start working
for them again.
It seemed the only answer was to start my own company. It was a big
challenge and pretty risky, but we did it. The company is SCOT-FREE
TERMITE & PEST
CONTROL and we are here to serve your needs through the most efficient
and economical way we can. I've learned a lot over the past few
